Dr. Aabideen, an Indian specialist in Abu Dhabi, completed the UAE's first paediatric stem cell bone marrow transplant. Dr. Zainul Aabideen, Head of the Department of Paediatric Hematology and Oncology at Burjeel Medical City, successfully performed the highly sophisticated allogeneic operation on a five-year-old Ugandan girl with sickle cell disease. The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the 400-bed multi-specialty hospital is the country's first child therapy of its sort. The patient's 10-year-old sister donated bone marrow for the transplant, which took place at VPS Healthcare's flagship facility, Burjeel Medical City. After a five-week stay at the hospital, which has advanced skills in adult and paediatric oncology, as well as long-term and palliative care, the patient has reacted well to therapy and will be home in a few days. Pediatric patients in the UAE who needed allogeneic stem cell bone marrow transplants previously travelled to the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and other European nations. Burjeel Medical City intends to extend its bone marrow transplant capabilities throughout the area in order to continue to make a difference in the lives of adults and children suffering from chronic and life-threatening illnesses.
