The USMLE Management Committee reviewed the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) passing standard in April 2022 and concluded that for Step 2 CK examinees testing on or after July 1, 2022, a five-point increase in the passing standard – used to determine a Pass or Fail outcome – will apply. The passing criterion on the three-digit scoring scale will increase from 209 to 214. A scheduled detailed evaluation and study of the passing standard for each Step test occurs every three to four years as part of the USMLE program's operating processes and in accordance with best practises for licencing and certification exams. This guarantees that the passing score matches current knowledge and skill requirements for effective medical practise and patient care. Since 2014, the current passing standard has remained constant. This change to the passing criterion was established after a long and rigorous review of data from a variety of sources, including: Results of surveys of various groups (e.g., residency programme directors, medical school faculty, state licencing representatives, examinees) regarding the appropriateness of the current passing standard for the Step 2 CK examination. On the USMLE website, the USMLE programme posts early notification of Step exam passing standard reviews and any changes.
