In only a few minutes, scientists in Scotland have devised an artificial intelligence (AI)-based diagnostic that utilizes X-rays to diagnose Covid reliably. Researchers at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) devised a testing platform that can identify the SARS-CoV-2 virus much faster than a PCR test, which can take up to two hours. The method might one day be used to reduce pressure on overburdened hospitals, especially in regions where PCR testing is not commonly available. The technique uses X-ray equipment to compare scans to a database of roughly 3000 pictures from Covid patients, healthy people, and those who have viral pneumonia. Nevertheless, it can serve an essential role in limiting the transmission of viruses, mainly when PCR testing is not commonly available. The researchers now intend to expand the study by including a more extensive database of X-ray pictures acquired by other brands of X-ray equipment to assess the approach's applicability in a clinical context.
